CAT or Common admission Test is a national-level MBA entrance exam conducted by the prestigious IIMs. Based on previous year trends, the conducting body of CAT 2019 is expected to be IIM Kozhikode. The CAT exam will be a computer based test of 3-hours duration to be conducted in two slots – morning and afternoon. CAT Exam Pattern 2019 can be described as comprising of 100 questions divided over 3 sections – Verbal & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA) with question being in MCQ format. CAT 2019 is expected to be held on 24th November 2019 across 156 cities in India.

CAT Exam Pattern 2019
History
The common admission test or CAT came into existence in the year 1950 (based on Wikipedia) initially being an aptitude test conducted in a descriptive paper. As the time passed away, the pattern became an objective one conducted through computer readable OMR sheets. The exam adopted a computer-based methodology in 2009, being the first prominent exam in the country to do so.
Salient Features of CAT Exam Pattern 2019
The CAT paper pattern, as currently known, came into existence when the prestigious IIM-Ahmedabad revamped the paper in 2015.
Currently, the CAT exam pattern can be described as follows:
- CAT Exam Pattern 2019 shall consist of 100 questions divided across 3 sections. These 03 section include the following:
- Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension. (VARC),
- Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) and
- Quantitative Aptitude (QA).
- Candidates will be allotted 01-hour for completing each section. The test taker won’t be able to switch between the sections during the paper.
- The questions asked in CAT 2019 shall be of two types:
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ),
- Type in The Answer (TITA).
- For each correct answer, the candidate shall be awarded 03 marks. A deduction of 01 mark shall be made for every incorrect answer in case of MCQs only. No negative marking is there for TITA type questions.
- At all given times, the candidates will have access to a virtual calculator.

NOTE- Non MCQ type questions need to be typed directly on screen using a virtual keyboard. There is no negative marking for them.

Section-wise CAT 2019 Exam Pattern
Section – I: Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)
The VARC section comprises of 34 questions – 24 MCQs and 10 TITAs. The section comprises of following types of question:
- 4 – 5 Reading Comprehension (RC): Passages on Economics, Culture & Society, Politics, Current Affairs and Natural Sciences etc.
- Verbal ability part includes, but is not limited to, Jumbled paragraph, Para summary, picking odd sentence out of jumbled sentences etc.
Section – II: Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)
DILR section is considered to be the most difficult of all the sections in every CAT question paper. The section usually comprises of 32 Question – 24 MCQs & 8 TITAs. Some of the questions in DILR include:
- DI sets: Comprising of Bar Charts, X-Y Graphs, Pie Charts, Caselets etc.
- LR questions: Seating Arrangements, Circular Arrangements, Sequencing, Coding & Decoding, Puzzles, Ranking etc.
Section – III: Quantitative Ability
The QA section comprises of 34 questions – 24 MCQs and 10 TITAs. The section comprises of following types of question:
- Arithmetic Question
- Number Systems
- Geometry
- Counting – Probability & Permutation – Combinations.
- Algebra
