TNEA 2018 Eligibility

Domicile Requirements

Candidates, belonging to the State of Tamil Nadu who have completed their 10+2 education from the state itself, are eligible.

Candidates, who do not belong to the state of Tamil Nadu, but have studied 8th – 12th standards from the state, can apply.

Tamil Nadu natives, who have completed their 10+2 examination from another state, satisfy the TNEA 2018 eligibility criteria.

Children of central government employees who have been serving in the state continuously for the past five or more years are also eligible. However, they must produce a valid service certificate of their parents or guardians.

Children of Officers belonging to All India Service Tamil Nadu Cadre are also eligible for the admission process.

Qualifying Examination

  • In order to be eligible, the applicant must have scored minimum 50% (General Category), or 45%(OBC Category), or 40% for MBC, DNC, SC, ST, and SCA in the 12th or equivalent exam.

Improvement Marks

As per 2008 order, improvement marks will not be considered in TNEA exam.

For Marine Engineering

Qualifying Examination

Passed the 12th std or equivalent exam with a minimum aggregate of 60% marks in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics combined.

Had English as a mandatory subject in 10th/12th & scored 50% marks in it either in 10th or 12th.

Age Limit

Age must haven’t exceeded 25 years.

Height & Weight

Candidate must be at least 157 cm tall & should bear at least 48 kg weight.

Normalization Procedure

TNEA admissions are solely based on candidate’s performance in the 12th or equivalent exam.

Marks scored by TNEA 2018 applicant in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics (PCM group) will be normalized to 200 for rank calculation.

Maximum marks applicable in PCM are first reduced to 200 (100 for Mathematics & 100 for Physics + Chemistry) & then equated with HSC exam of Tamil Nadu state board.

Consider the example of a candidate called X.

Let’s say, Mr. X has scored 60 marks in Physics in HSC exam. However, the topper of X’s board has scored 90 marks in the same subject. On the other hand, topper of Tamil Nadu state board has scored 100 in Physics.

Therefore, in X’s case, his normalized marks will be calculated as:

X’s Physics Score = 60
X’s Board topper’s Physics score = 90
Tamil Nadu’s HSC topper score = 100.

X’s Normalized Physics Marks =  (100/90) X60 = 66.66

In the case of nationalized board like CBSE, the marks will not be equated with Tamil Nadu state board marks. The normalization in these cases will be done using marks scored by toppers of the respective board.
