JIPMER: An Introduction
Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research is a public medical college and research institute located in Pondicherry, popularly known by acronym “JIPMER”. The institute was established in 1823 by the French Imperial government to educate French citizens in medicine. However, after the independence of Pondicherry in 1956, the institute was renamed to “Medical college, Pondicherry” by the Indian Govt.
But in 1964, the institute was named “JIPMER” in honor of India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru.
Currently, the institute is India’s premier medical institute after AIIMS, New Delhi. In 2008, JIPMER was declared the Institute of National Importance due to its unprecedented contribution to medical studies in India.
