Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU Kanpur), Kanpur is a state – owned technical university based in Kanpur, UP. The institute was born in 1920 as the Government Research Institute, Cawnpore. But was renamed, the Harcourt Butler Technical institute after Sir Spencer Harcourt, governor British India in 1926. However, in 2016, HBTI was conferred with deemed university status making it Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU). Currently, the university offers degree courses in Engineering, Management, and Computers.

HBTU Kanpur (previously HBTI) is located in the Nawabganj area of the city of Kanpur.
The distance between the Kanpur Central Railway station and HBTU campus is 10 Km while it is 16.6 Km from Kanpur Airport.
However, the UPSTC bus stand is merely 3.5 Km from the campus.
HBTU Kanpur Ranking
HBTU Kanpur (previously HBTI) is among the finest universities in the country, as well as the state of UP. For decades, the institute has been a member of the top 50 engineering colleges club.
HBTI was named the 24th best engineering college in India by Outlook Magazine. It has consistently been ranked at 1st spot in the list of best state engineering colleges in UP. In 2015, HBTI was awarded the excellence award by VIT University, Vellore.
The team of EduPadhai has placed the institute at the 45th spot in the list of top 50 engineering colleges in India.

From 2017 onwards, B.Tech & M.C.A admissions at HBTU Kanpur are based on candidate’s performance in JEE (Main).

Registrations for B.Tech admissions 2018-19 shall begin from 29th June 2018.
M.Tech admissions at HBTU Kanpur are purely based on GATE scores.
Doctorate admissions are made via the Principal, QIP (Quality Improvement Program), appointed each year by Govt. of India.

HBTU Kanpur Campus
HBTU Kanpur is housed inside a 340 – acre campus. The campus is divided into 2 wings – east campus (70 – acres) and west campus (271 – acres).
The east campus began functioning in 1921 when HBTI was born. Because of this reason, all the major establishments in HBTU are based in this part of the campus. Buildings at the eastern campus include the following.
