Introduction

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Engineering Services Examination (ESE). It is a national-level recruitment exam for recruitment of Class – 1 engineer officers in Government departments.  This exam is conducted every year.

Applications from male/ female/ transgender are invited for the following:

UPSC ESE 2023 will recruit in following categories:

Category I-Civil Engineering.

Category II-Mechanical Engineering.

Category III-Electrical Engineering.

Category IV-Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering

Note:  (i) For service wise details, refer page 2 & 3 of official notification.

       (ii) A candidate may apply for admission to the examination in respect of anyone of the categories of the Services/Posts mentioned viz. Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

 The complete recruitment process will involve 3 stages:

Preliminary Test,

Main Test and,

Personal Interview

Mode of Exams:

ESE 2023 is divided into 3 stages:

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Pen-Paper based on OMR Answer Sheet)

Stage 2: Mains Examination     (Descriptive  written exam)

Stage 3: Interview

Note :     There is no Computer-based Test (Online exam).

 

Medium of Examination

Conventional papers must be answered in English. Question paper will be set in English only.

Nationality

  • An applicant must be either:

 (a) a citizen of India, or

(b) a subject of Nepal, or

(c) a subject of Bhutan, or

(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently setting in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India and that a candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment shall be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him/her by the Government of India.

 Minimum Educational Qualification

Candidate must:

For admission to the examination, a candidate must have –

Obtained a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956; 

OR

Passed Sections A and B of Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India).

OR

Obtained a degree in Engineering from a foreign institution/university recognized by Government of India for the purpose from time to time.

OR

 Passed Associate Membership Examination’s Parts II and III / Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India.

OR

Qualified the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India).

OR

 Have a graduate degree in Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London which must be held after November 1959.

Note:  (i) Eligibility of the candidates of the Institutions concerned will be subject to the decision of the Government in pursuance of the judgement of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in the MA 2367/2018 in the Civil Appeal No. 17922/2017 dated 13.08.2019.

(ii)       A candidate who has appeared at an examination the passing of which would render him educationally qualified for this examination, but has not been informed of the result, may apply for admission to the examination. A candidate who intends to appear, at such a qualifying examination may also apply. Such candidates will be admitted to the examination, if otherwise eligible, but their admission would be deemed to be provisional and subject to cancellation, if they do not produce proof of having passed the requisite qualifying examination along with the Detailed Application From which will be required to be submitted by the candidates who qualify on the result of the written part of the examination. Such proof of passing the requisite examination should be dated earlier than the due date (closing date) for Detailed Application Form for Engineering Services Examination.

(iii)   In exceptional cases, the Commission may treat a candidate, who has not any of the qualifications prescribed in this rule, as educationally qualified provided that he/she has passed examinations conducted by other institutions the standard of which in the opinion of the Commission justifies his/her admission to the examination.

(iv)   A candidate who is otherwise qualified but who has taken a degree from a foreign University which is not recognised by Government, may also apply to the Commission and may be admitted to the examination at the discretion of the Commission.

Age Limit (as on 01st January, 2023)

A candidate for this examination must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on the 1 st January, 2023 i.e., candidate  must have been born not earlier than    2nd January, 1993 and not later than 1 st January, 2002.

 Note : For relaxation in upper age limit in various categories including post in the particular Department/Office concerned for which vacancies advertised, refer official notification.

Note: (i) Applicants should note that there will be a ceiling on the number of candidates allotted to each of the centres except Chennai, Dispur, Kolkata and Nagpur.

(ii) Allotment of Centres will be on the firstapplyfirstallot basis and once the capacity of a particular centre is attained, the same will be frozen.

         (iii) Applicants, who will not get a centre of their choice due to ceiling, will be required to choose a centre from the remaining ones.

         (iv) Applicants are advised that they may apply early as possible so that they can get a Centre of their choice.

        (vCommission reserve the right to change the Centres at their discretion if the situation demands.

Steps of Applying

  1. One Time Registration (OTR)

One Time registration is mainly comprises of candidate’s basic information viz. such as Name, Father’s Name, Candidate’s educational details, gender, Address for Correspondence, email, mobile number etc

              Step 1:   For OTR, Go on link: :   https://upsconline.nic.in/upsc/OTRP/registration.php 

                Step 2: Fill all the data as per registration form & submit.   

                Step 3: After registration candidate has to log in (by email Id/ Mobile Number/OTR Id) to verify the already registered OTR application.                

  1. Filling of Application

Step 1: For filling the application, Candidate to log in:

https://upsconline.nic.in/upsc/OTRP/registration.php 

Step 2: Click Already Log in

Step 3: Log in with registered email Id/ Mobile Number as Login Id through OTP or OTR Id through password.

Step 4: Fill in all the sought for information & exam centres after selecting Exam.

Step 5: Upload scanned copies of all the required documents.

Step 6: Make the payment of requisite fee as through specified mode.

Step 6: Verify all the filled in data/ information for correctness & submit.

Note: The specified certificates for uploading shall be as per given formats in the official notification.

 Admit Card

ESE 2023 Admit cards : UPSC will release ESE 2023 admit cards for Preliminary exam 03 weeks prior to  the scheduled date of examinations and dates yet to be notified.

Candidates must download the ESE 2023hall tickets from the official UPSC website and must produce it during the examination.

ESE 2023 Examination Pattern

ESE 2023 exam is a 3- stage recruitment process.

Only those Candidates qualifying the Preliminary exam will be eligible for the Mains exam. Similarly, the ones who qualify the Main exam will only be eligible to appear for Interview.

The Preliminary examination will be an objective-type paper with 2 sections as described below.

 Note: (i) An incorrect answer will deduct 1/3 mark per response.

         (ii)  If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers happen to be correct and there will be same penalty as above for that question.

        (iii) If a question is left blank i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question.          

Stage II: Main Exam

Stage 2 or the main exam will be a descriptive test with opted discipline of Engineering  There will be 2 papers ( Paper-1 & paper-II) carrying 300 marks each of duration 3-hour for each of the paper.

Stage III: Personal Interview

Candidates who declare qualified in Mains exam will be eligible for the Personal interview carrying 200 marks.

The final result will be based on the total score of all 3 exams.

The ESE 2023 final result will be based on the total marks of all three stages.

Candidate must have been born after 2nd January 1988 and before 1st Jan 1997, falling in 21-30 Years Age bracket. are u sure that it will be calculated from january. but in 2018 notice they mentioned.it is 1st august. what is the exact month? plz reply
