Tripura

Tripura is one of the seven sister states on the North-Eastern side of India and around 2400 km. away from our capital. This state consists of 0.30% population of India. This state has a rich history that is a must-know for everyone.

1 History1.1 Tripura became a Union Territory on 1st November 1956.
1.2 It became a state on 21st January, 1972.
2 Geography2.1 Climate:
(i) The state has a tropical savanna climate.
(ii) The four main seasons are winter, from December to February; pre-monsoon or summer, from March to April; monsoon, from May to September; and post-monsoon, from October to November.
2.2 Agriculture:
(i) Rice, the major crop of the state, is cultivated in 91% of the cropped area.
(ii) Potato, sugarcane, mesta, pulses and jute were the other major crops cultivated in the state.
(iii) Jackfruit and pineapple top the list of horticultural products.
(iv) Traditionally, most of the indigenous population practised jhum method (a type of slash-and-burn) of cultivation. The number of people dependent on jhum has declined over the years.
(v) Pisciculture has made significant advances in the state.
(vi) Rubber and tea are the important cash crops of the state. Tripura ranks second to Kerala in the production of natural rubber in the country.
(vii) High quality timber including sal, garjan, teak and gamar are found abundantly in the forests of Tripura.

2.3 Natural Resources:
(i) Natural gas is the most important mineral resource in Tripura.
(ii) Other minerals of significance found to occur in the State are glass sands, limestone, fireclay, plastic clay, shale and quartz-silica sand used particularly for building/construction purposes.

2.4 Major rivers:
Burima, Gomati, Khowai, Howrah, Longai, Dhalai, Muhuri, Feni, Juri and Manu.

Elephant, Bear, Binturong, Wild Dog, Porcupine, Barking Deer, Sambar, Wild Boar, Gaur, Leopard, Clouded Leopard and Wild Buffalo.

4.2 Industries:
Major industries are as under: –
(i) The industrial sector of the state continues to be highly underdeveloped – brickfields and tea industry are the only two organised sectors.
(ii) Tripura has considerable reservoirs of natural gas.
5 Transportation5.1 Air, Rail and Road are the major modes of transportation of Tripura.
 
5.2 Other Important facts:
(i) Only one major road, the National Highway 8 (NH-8), connects Tripura to the rest of India.
(ii) Tripura has an 856 km (532 mi) long international border with Bangladesh, of which 777.4 km (483.1 mi) is fenced, as of 2012.
(iii) Citizens of both countries need visa to legally enter the other country; however, illegal movement and smuggling across the border are widespread.
(iv) A new railway line is being laid westwards from Agartala to Akhaura in Bangladesh. This will reduce the distance between Agartala and Calcutta by over 1000 km and provide rail access to Chittagong port.
