INTRODUCTION
JEE Main is a top coveted engineering entrance exam of the country conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA), twice a year. Merit obtained in test form basis of admission in various B.E, B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Plan courses to the aspiring candidates. A large number of Engineering colleges including CFTIs ( Centrally Funded Technical Institutions) and NITs ( National Institutions of Technology) accept JEE main score cards for admissions to eligible candidates. It is also stage one exam for two stage exam for admission in IITs. This is a qualifying exam to appear in JEE ( Advance). For next Academic year 2020-21, 1st exam will be conducted in month of January 2020 and 2nd will be in month of April 2020.

Requirement of Normalization Procedure
The examination conducting body i.e. NTA conducts the test on multiple dates and that too, generally in two sessions per day. The candidates are given different sets of question papers per session and it is every likely hood that in spite of all efforts of maintaining equivalence among various question papers, the difficulty level of these question papers conducted in different sessions may not be exactly same. It is likely that some of the candidates are attempting relatively tougher set of questions when compared to other sets. The candidates who attempt the comparatively tougher examination are likely to get relatively lower marks as compared to those candidates who attempt the easier questions.. In such situation, to ensure that candidates are neither benefitted nor disadvantaged,“Normalization procedure based on Percentile Score” is used due to different difficulty level of the examination. With the objective of ensuring that a candidate’s true merit is identified, and that a level playing field is created in the above context, the Normalization Procedure, set out by the examination conducting body NTA for compiling the scores for multi session papers.
Salient Points of Normalization Procedure
1 The Normalization procedure is an established practice for comparing candidate’s scores across the multi session papers and is similar to those which is being adopted in other educational selection tests conducted in India.
2 For normalization across sections, the percentile equivalence is used.
3 Percentile Scores: Percentile scores are scores based on the relative performance of all those who appear for the examination. Basically, the marks obtained are transformed into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees.
4 The Percentile score is the Normalized Score for the examination for preparation of the merit lists instead of raw marks obtained by the candidate.
5 The Percentile Scores is calculated up to 7 decimal places to avoid bunching effect and reduce chances of tie.
6 The best of the two score of JEE ( Main) of the candidates appeared in both the attempts will be considered for preparation of final merit.
METHOD OF RESOLVING TIES:
The overall merit / ranking shall be based on the Percentile scores of the total raw scores.
In case two or more candidates obtain equal Percentile Scores in the Test, the inter-se merit of such candidates shall be determined in order of preference as follows:
(a) Candidates obtaining higher Percentile Score in Mathematics in the Test.
(b) Candidates obtaining higher Percentile Score in Physics in the Test.
(c) Candidates obtaining higher Percentile Score in Chemistry in the Test.
(d) Candidates older in age to be preferred.
Detailed Procedure:
NTA has published a detailed procedure ( with elaborated example) for calculating the percentile for final merit. Candidates can refer the same on link : Normalization Procedure
