Madhya Pradesh is around 900 km. away from our capital. It consists of 6% population of India. The state is known as the heart of India. And just like the name, it has a rich culture which pumps the cultural blood all over the country.

1 History | 1.1 Madhya Pradesh was found on 1st November, 1956. Earlier it was known as ”Bhopal State”. 1.2 After India’s independence, Madhya Pradesh state was created with Nagpur as its capital: this state included the southern parts of the present-day Madhya Pradesh and northeastern portion of today’s Maharashtra. 1.3 In 1956, this state was reorganised and its parts were combined with the states of Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh and Bhopal to form the new Madhya Pradesh state, the Marathi-speaking Vidarbha region was removed and merged with the Bombay State. |
2 Geography | 2.1 Climate: 2.1.1 Madhya Pradesh has three major seasons – Summer, Monsoon and Winter. 2.1.2 During summer (March–June), the temperature in the entire state ranges above 29.4°C. 2.1.3 The south-west Monsoon usually breaks out in mid-June and the entire state receive a major share of its rainfall between June and September. 2.1.4 The winter season starts from the month of November. The temperature remains low in the northern parts of the state in comparison to the southern parts. 2.2 Agriculture: 2.2.1 The major agricultural products of Madhya Pradesh are soybeans, grams, oilseeds, pulses and food grains. 2.2.2 Other crops of Madhya Pradesh are wheat, soybean, gram, sugarcane, rice, maize, cotton, rapeseed, mustard and arhar. 2.2.3 Minor Forest Produce (MFP), such as tendu leaves used to roll beedi, sal seed, teak seed, and lak also contribute to state’s rural economy. 2.2.4 Madhya Pradesh is also famous for honey production in district Morena. 2.3 Natural Resources: 2.3.1 The state has the largest reserves of diamond and copper in India. 2.3.2 Other major mineral reserves include those of coal, coalbed methane, manganese and dolomite. 2.4 Major rivers: Narmada, Tapti, Chambal, Shipra, Kali Sindh, Parbati, Kuno, Sind, Betwa, Dhasan and Ken. Some Important Facts: (i) The Narmada–Tapti systems carry an enormous volume of water and provide drainage for almost a quarter of the land area of Madhya Pradesh. (ii) The Narmada river is considered very sacred and is worshipped throughout the region. (iii) Shipra River is one of the most sacred rivers of Hinduism. It is the site of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, which is held every 12 years. 2.5 Animals: Tiger, Gharial, River Dolphin, Smooth-coated Otter, Turtles and Mugger. 2.6 Neighbouring States: Uttar Pradesh – North-East Chhattisgarh – South-East Maharashtra – South Gujarat – West Rajasthan – North-West 2.7 Capital city: Bhopal 2.7A Largest City Indore 2.8 Total Land Area: (i) Total area is 308,245 sq. km.
