Introduction


Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is a premier recruitment exam for employing Class – 1 engineer officers in Govt. Departments. The exam is usually conducted by UPSC every year in the month of January. ESE is 3-stage recruitment process involving 2 stages of written exam (Objective in stage 1 and conventional in stage 2) followed by an Interview.

Every year, ESE is used by the premier govt departments such as MES, Railways, BSF etc. as a recruiting tool. Out of the humungous number of engineering disciplines, only the following 4 are considered in ESE:

  1. Civil Engineering.
  2. Mechanical Engineering.
  3. Electrical Engineering.
  4. Electronics and Telecommunication engineering.

ESE 2018 Vacancies


As per the official announcement made by UPSC, a total of 588 vacancies will be considered in ESE 2018.

However, ESE 2017 had a total of 440 vacancies released.

Language of Examination


The UPSC ESE 2018 examination will be conducted in ENGLISH language only.

Mode of Answering


As mentioned in the introduction, ESE 2018 has 2 stages of written exam – Pre and Mains.

The ESE 2018 (Preliminary) exam shall involve response being made through OMR Sheets. It will comprise of objective type questions only.

On the other hand, the ESE 2018 (Mains) exam shall involve the Conventional mode of answering (similar to school/college exams).

ESE 2018 Exam Date


The ESE 2018 (Preliminary) examination will be held on 7th January 2018.

Further, the ESE 2018 (Main) examination will be conducted on 1st July 2018.

ESE 2018 Eligibility Criteria


Nationality


Candidates holding any of the following Nationalities can apply for UPSC ESE 2018 exam:

  • Citizen of India or
  • Belongs to Bhutan or Nepal or
  • Tibetan Refugee, who had come to India before 1st January 1962, and have their permanent settlement in India or
  • Emigrates from Countries like Pakistan, Sri-Lanka, Burma and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Zaire, United Republic of Tanzania, Vietnam and Ethiopia who intend for permanent settlement in India.

All the candidates from Neighbouring Countries must hold an Eligibility Certificate from the Government of India.

Educational Qualification


A degree in Engineering from a recognized College/University.

OR

Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution  of  Engineers  (India)

OR

Bears a degree/diploma in Engineering from a foreign University/College/Institution recognized by the Government for the purpose

OR

Qualified the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India)

OR

passed Associate Membership Examination  Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India

OR

 passed Graduate   Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November 1959

A candidate applying for the post of Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts) and Indian Radio Regulatory Service Gr ‘A’ bearing the following educational qualification, apart from the ones mentioned above is also eligible for ESE 2018.

An M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.

Students who have appeared for any of the above exams in 2018 are also eligible for ESE 2018.

ESE 2018 Age Limit


  • Age must be within 21-30 years, as on 1st January 2018. In other words, the candidate must have been born after 2nd Jan 1987 but before 1st Jan 1996.
  • The Date of Birth as mentioned in the certificate of 10th Exam will be considered for age count.
  • Following age relaxation is applicable for the reserved category:

ESE 2018 Application


The application forms for ESE 2018 ARE CLOSED NOW.

ESE 2018 Application Forms are available in digital format only, with the whole process being completely online/digital. There is no offline process of registration.

ESE 2018 Application Fees


The application fee for ESE 2018 was Rs. 200 for General category/OBC Males.

Female/SC/ST/PH candidates are exempted from paying the application fee.

Application Fee must be deposited by either of the following methods:

  1. Credit Card, Debit Card.
  2. Net Banking.
  3. Cash payment at any SBI Branch.

Photograph and Signature Specifications


Here, the Scanned Photograph (Size: 3KB-40KB; Resolution) and the signature (Size: 1KB-40KB) of the Candidate should be uploaded in JPEG format.

ESE 2018 Admit Card


  • Applicants can download their ESE Admit Cards from the official Website of UPSC.
  • Details related to Exam Date and Exam Centre will be contained in the Admit Card.

ESE 2018 Exam Pattern


ESE 2018 exam is a 3 Staged recruitment process—Preliminary, Mains and Personal Interview.

The Candidates qualifying the Preliminary exam will be allowed to sit for the Mains exam. Similarly, the ones who qualify the Main exam will appear for Interview.

Stage 1: Preliminary Exam


ESE 2018 (Preliminary) test further has 2 Papers – Paper I and Paper II. Both the papers shall be objective type in nature.

Paper, I will be 2 hours long objective type test. It will carry a total of 200 marks. The paper will have General studies and engineering aptitude questions only.

Paper II of stage I shall be 3-hours in duration with maximum marks amounting to 300. This paper will have questions from engineering discipline chosen by the candidate.

Stage 2: Mains Exam


Candidates, who will obtain the minimum required marks in Prelims, shall qualify for ESE 2018 (Mains).

Similar to the Stage 1, the Main stage of ESE 2018 will also have 2 papers. Both of these papers shall be conventional in nature (Like school/college exam) carrying 300 marks each. The duration of these papers will be 3 hours each.

Stage 3: Personal Interview


The candidates who will qualify both the Preliminary and the Mains Exam will be eligible for a Personal Interview of 200 marks.

The final merit will be cumulative of candidate’s performance in all 3 stages.

ESE 2018 Results


UPSC ESE 2018 (Main) Results have been announced on 2nd August 2018.

  • One Stage of the Exam will act as the Qualifier for the next Stage.
  • The performance of the candidate in all the three stages will determine the Final Selection.
