Chhattisgarh is around 1300 km. away from our capital, Delhi. It is a newly-made state that started its journey on 1st November 2000 after splitting from Madhya Pradesh. This state consists of 2.11% population of India and it is quite important in terms of economy.

2 Geography | 2.1 Climate: 2.1.1 Chhattisgarh has a tropical climate. 2.1.2 It is hot and humid in the summer because of its proximity to the Tropic of Cancer and its dependence on the monsoons for rains. 2.1.3 The monsoon season is from late June to October and is a welcome respite from the heat. 2.1.4 Winter is from November to January. Winters are pleasant with low temperatures and less humidity. 2.2 Agriculture: 2.2.1 Horticulture and animal husbandry also engage a major share of the total population of the state. 2.2.2 Chhattisgarh State is ranked as the 17th-largest tea-producing state in India. 2.2.3 The main crops are rice, maize, kodo-kutki and other small millets and pulses (tuar and kulthi); oilseeds, such as groundnuts (peanuts), soybeans and sunflowers, are also grown. 2.2.4 Chhattisgarh is also called the “rice bowl of central India”. 2.3 Natural Resources: 2.3.1 Chhattisgarh produces 50% of the country’s total cement production. 2.3.2 It has the highest output of coal in the country with second-highest reserves. 2.3.3 It is third in iron ore production and first in tin production. 2.3.4 Limestone, dolomite and bauxite are abundant. 2.3.5 It is the only tin ore-producing state in India. 2.3.6 Other commercially extracted minerals include corundum, garnet, quartz, marble, alexandrite and diamonds. 2.4 Major Rivers: Mahanadi, Ganga, Godavari, and Narmada. Chhattisgarh provides electricity to several other states because of surplus production. (ii) The steel industry is one of the biggest heavy industries of Chhattisgarh. Bhilai Steel Plant, Bhilai operated by SAIL, with a capacity of 5.4 million tonnes per year, is regarded as a significant growth indicator of the state. (iii) More than 100 steel rolling mills, 90 sponge iron plants and ferro-alloy units are in Chhattisgarh. (iv) The aluminium industry of Chhattisgarh was established by Bharat Aluminium Company Limited. |
