Today, on 24th May 2017 Wednesday, Madurai Bench of Madras High Court stayed all the proceedings relating to NEET (National-Eligibility-cum-Entrance-Test) up to 07th Jun 2017. Notices have been issued to all respondents including CBSE, the exam conducting body, Medical council of India, Union Health and Family welfare Secretary New Delhi amongst others to file their counter replies.  The pre – scheduled date of release of the result is 08 Jun 2017.

In light of above stay, answer key, evaluation, and declaration of result is not possible till stay is vacated in coming days.

What the petition is…

The Honorable court has granted the stay on the ground that different question papers were set for the NEET exam, held in 10 languages, leading to discrimination in evaluation between aspirant candidates.

The order has been passed by the court on a writ petition filed by a group of 09 students from Madurai, seeking direction from the court to Central Government to cancel the NEET exam held on 07 May 2017. The non-uniformity of question papers in all the languages is a denial of an equal assessment of intelligence and aptitude among candidates. Thus, an uneven playing field will infringe the right of equal opportunity in the field of education conferred by Art. 14 of Constitution of India.

It is also argued by petitioners that paper framed in the Tamil language was much easier than in English.

The NEET Exam

The NEET exam system was started in 2013 after the then HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal, scrapped the previously held 2 – step AIPMT system. Designed to free students from the stress of numerous entrance exams, the NEET exam has itself been a cause of major stress with uncertainties looming over it since inception. It seems that a common entrance exam system, as dreamed by our HRD ministry, is still a distant dream.

Let’s hope an alternate happy outcome for the Common entrance exam scheme for Engineering to be held from 2018.
